Otago Region Corrections Facility, NZ
Otago Corrections Facility is a multiclassification adult male facility located near Dunedin in New Zealand. The design provides accommodation for 330 inmates, with infrastructure to support expansion to 500 beds.
The site had previously been used for dairying and has extensive views to surrounding ranges in all directions. The masterplan design is developed from the regional farmland pattern of fields bounded by shelterbelts.
The site layout divides the facility into a series of zones: town square, support, high security, low security and self care. The zoning arrangement and accommodation building designs support the operational plan wherein prisoners progress from higher security to lower security during the course of their sentence. An increase in privileges and independence accompanies the change in accommodation type.
The materials palette includes precast concrete, blockwork, sheet cladding and metal roofing. Colour is used to signify each building. The Facility is characterised by a sense of openness, with well proportioned landscaped open spaces in each zone and views beyond the secure perimeter to the broader landscape.
