Mount Druitt Court House
Court buildings have traditionally been designed as formal, symmetrical and imposing civic buildings. Mt Druitt Court House is a modern interpretation of this building type, incorporating contemporary accessibility, security and technological requirements.
The project was founded on creating a safe environment in which to administer the legal system, providing a facility to serve the community of Mount Druitt and the surrounding areas. The building includes two “Local” Court rooms, a Community Justice Centre and custodial holding areas.
Mt Druitt Court House is sited on a prominent street corner, opposite the railway line and close to the railway station. The striking entry canopy is visible from all directions, creating a strong identity and clearly articulating the civic nature of the building. An elevated entry forecourt reinforces the symbolic importance of the Court facility, mediating the transition from street level to the building interior.
The Court House design balances transparency with security and privacy. Public spaces are designed with natural daylighting and views to external spaces to foster a calm ambience. Clarity of internal planning arrangements contribute to a sense of safety for all users.
Pre-cast concrete panels, pre-weathered metal wall cladding, glazed brickwork, glass and metal roofing were selected as external materials. These are appropriate for the scale and purpose of the building and are particularly robust and resistant to vandalism. PA were engaged for the full duration of the project, from brief development to handover of the completed building.
