Estella Public School
Pedavoli Architects were engaged to design this 480-student school located on Wiradjuri land. Connecting with Country was integral to the design process from early concept development.
The school’s built form mimics a river bend that tracks the site’s contours, highlighting the connection between the Wiradjuri people and the Murrumbidgee River. The river’s curve creates a unique context-specific site plan that encompasses a variety of outdoor learning environments. Dixon Patten (Bitja) from Bayila Creative created an artwork for a perforated screen that forms the level 1 balustrade. The artwork tells the story of the Wiradjuri people and their connection to land, river and community.
The learning environments, both internal and external provide for flexibility in pedagogy so that they are not only valid learning spaces today but can adapt along with the developing teaching and learning methodologies. Operable walls and large open spaces can be arranged to facilitate a variety of teaching and learning styles. The school was constructed using modular offsite construction and onsite conventional construction methodologies. This hybrid approach ensures a high-quality and context-specific outcome.
