Lidcombe TAFE
The proposed works for Lidcombe TAFE involved an adaptive reuse of the existing Block F. PA was tasked with the provision of new teaching facilities for Furniture Design, Product Design, Interior Design and Graphic Arts, including multi-purpose workshops, design studios, stores, display areas and an array of classrooms.
‘A box inside a box’ was the design notion driving the project, its effect pronounced by the expression of materials and textures. PA used this idea to challenge traditional conventions of learning pedagogy and the architectural language that accompanies it.
The construction detailing and selection of materials is highly refined, while remaining robust and approachable. The use of an environmentally friendly plywood, in multiple textures, as the main wall cladding material helped to offer warmth and familiarity, while maintaining a modern and durable finish appropriate for a workshop and creative arts space.
